Mr James Dodd was born in Hanley where he was brought up and received his education. In the early 1930’s he started working as an agent for a firebrick company in Fenton, and this meant that he visited all the pottery factories in Stoke-on-Trent. In the course of his work he came into contact with the various works managers and as well as receiving orders for firebricks he was able to supply other items acting in his capacity as an agent. The earliest document we have of Mr. Dodd being in business on his own account is a letter dated September 1932. We can therefore state that the James Dodd business has been in existence for over 80 years. The business was first of all run from Longsdon, near Leek, then over the course of time and with larger premises needed, from a farm in Wetley Rocks. This was until July 1999 when it was decided to move to the newly built industrial units off Station Road in Cheddleton. Here the business is today, serving a wide range of customers including all types of industry, the motor trade, schools, nursing and care homes, veterinary surgeries, restaurants, etc. and all are offered a prompt and efficient delivery service.
